response..

In the article “ how to tome a wild tongue”, the writer first tells us a story that she was taught speaking Spanish at recess and the teacher ask her to come back to speak. However, in my opinion, I do not think it is right. I think the writer is out-standing because she can speak many different kinds of language. For example, she can speak English Standard Spanish, Standard Mexican Spanish, North Mexican dialect, and Chicano Texas Spanish. I regarded them as literacy. And I think it is good for her to practice them because practice makes perfect and she will not forget them as well.
As I say, language is important in any culture. A language does far more than just enable people to communicate with each other. The language of one country is different from the other country and it tells the features of the country which distinguish it from one company to another.
Language shapes the way people perceive the world and it also provides help to define culture of any society. There are countries in which more than one language is spoken, and if in that case, you can find more than one culture in that society. For example Canada has the English-speaking and French-speaking culture. Similarly, America is a country that mixes all kinds of culture. So I think people should be free to talk in any language they want.
Language, of course, is knowledge, and in our world today knowledge is one of the key factors in competitiveness. Brains and knowledge are what create the prosperity and growth we tend to take for granted. In an advanced industrial society in an increasingly interdependent world, the knowledge of other language becomes indispensable. Seriously, there are rapidly growing trade links in the Americans, and learning Spanish or Portuguese is an important tool for business people and officials seeking to build on those ties. As we move toward hemispheric economic integration, the knowledge of other languages of the hemisphere is becoming a highly marketable skill.
According to all the above, I think different language is a very wonderful skill. It not only increase one’s literacy, but reflect different culture as well.

words in chinese culture----response to reading in class

In the article boone written by Elizabeth Hill, she talks about many kinds of literacy, especially the visual literacy such as photograph, writing, speaking and etc. among all the literacies, I want to talk about the writing, the words literacy in my own culture. as we know, chinese words are one of the most difficult language in the wold. I want to say something about the evolution of the chinese language.
when talking about the writing utensils of Chinese characters, people often think of four treasures of the study, that is, brush, ink stick, ink slab and paper first. Among them, paper is the carrier of writing, and brush is the main writing tool. Besides brush and ink, the writing utensils of Chinese characters include graver Jijue( one kind of knife used for engraving on metals and stones),ect.
The origin of Chinese writing can be traced back to ancient China, although we are not certain of the date of its invention. According to some statistics, Chinese writing has at least a history of four thousands years. I t is generally believed that people made records by tying a knot in a rope. This way of recording was replaced by the invention of words by Tsang Chie.
We can not say that there is no word before Tsang Chie. Actually, Tsang only combined the invented words of his predecessors with slight changes. Meanwhile, thereawas still another inventor called Chu Sung.
Nonetheless, the fact the Chinese written was originated in painting is beyond doubt and this is why modern chinese consider writing and paining to have the same origin. And it is match what Elizabrth writes in her essay---writing and paining are the same form of literacy.

"How does literacy shape technology? How does technology shape literacy?"

When comes to the question “How does literacy shape technology and how does technology shape literacy.” I think the relation is obvious.
First of all, literacy does shape the technology greatly. Literacy is the ability that people have. And the potential of people is endless. It is our human that create the technology and push the society going forward. Thanks to the White Brothers, we can travel around the world in the air. Thanks to Edison, we can work, live, and so all kinds of things in a bright area. Owing to Bell, we can hear other people’s sound at a very far distance. All these technology is created by human potential. That is human’s literacy that creates the technology and pushes the wheels of the history going forward.
As we see above, literacy plays a very important role in shaping technology. However, it is not the whole story. On the other hand, technology shapes literacy as well. Due to the power loom, hard weavers lost their jobs. Because of the kerosene, candle makers lost their jobs. Owning to the tractors, farm laborers lost their jobs. With the appearance of electronic switching, switchboard operators lost their jobs. Technology selects people of high potential. In that case, people will do something that they are good at, in other words, do something they have comparative advantages. Also, because of the selection of technology, more people turn to school for better education in order to improve themselves and out compete with other people. As a consequence of it, their literacies improve. That is how technology shape people’s literacy.

like a audient..

Community comes in many forms, medium, sound, pictures, words all are a certain kind of community. Modern ways of community, in most cases, contain more than one component. For example, people often combine them together to form a new outcome and it certainly become more attracted.

Let’s take commercial video for example, which I mean is advertisement. When advertisers make video, they have a very direct purpose such as convince people to buy their products, make people believe that their products are the best in order to increase their sales and profits. We are all the audients of the advertisements since we watch television in our daily life and I am not an exception. Suppose I watch a video, how will I make a judgment about the products and make a decision whether buy or not? I think there are many factors that can influence my decisions. First of all, the whole view of the advertisement. That is, the visual enjoyment. Is the video funny, beautiful, and attracted? All else equal, I will prefer one that is more beautiful. In this sense, I think the video makers are supposed to make the pictures clear and beautiful. No matter what the content is, it is the most important to persuade people to sit down and watch. Consider if no one is willing to watch the advertisement, it makes totally no use to make the content better. Another factor that is equally important with the picture is the content. I think the content should be reliable. I prefer the real results from the public researches. Based on the scientific results, it will be easier to convince people that their products are better.
If advertisers meet the two important requirements above, the advertisements are supposed to be good, but not perfect in my view because I think the perfect thing should be creative. If you want to be outstanding, you should insert something special and creative. If in that case, I think the audients will convince you in most times.

literacy #4 blog entry #5

When I got to the campus in January, I make a chat with many blanks. Every blank represent a day. So when a day passes, I fill the blank with a color. I told myself that when all the blanks are filled, it is time to go home. This morning, when I color the march 20th blank, I suddenly realize that most of the time in this semester has gone, even I failed to recognize. I ask myself what I have learned and whether I regret wasting time in the past. After thinking hard, I think I was dong just ok but there is still a long way to go in my time management. And it leads me to think a kind of literacy----time management.
Time management is a set of principles, practices, skills, tools, and systems that help you use your time to accomplish what you want. First of all, time is limited. Time is a very special resource in that you cannot store it or save it for later. Everyone gets the exact same amount of time each day. If you didn’t use your time wisely, you can never get it back. Secondly, time is scare. We often feel like we have too much things to do and not enough time. In a certain degree, it will leads to an unfilled life. Time management helps you use the time that you do have in better ways. Thirdly, you need time to get what you want out of life. It means you need time to do almost anything worthwhile in life. You need to learn how to make time for the thingk that are important to you. Even if you can only afford to give a small amount of time each week to your goals, you would be surprised at how much progress you can make. What’s more, you can manage time well, you can accomplish more with less effort. When you become more productive using improved time management skills and tools, you can accomplish more with less effort. Reducing wasted time and effort gives you even more productive time throughout the day. Both of these allow you to make time for a wide range of activities that bring more balance and fulfillment to your life. Since everyday we have too many choices to spend our time, time management helps us to make conscious choices so we can spend more of our time doing things that are important and valuable to us.
Now that most of the semester has gone, I think it is time I tried to manage my time better in the coming days. In this case, when I go back to China in May, I will be proud of myself without regret.

literacy #3 blog entry #4

Chinese chess, or xiangqi in Chinese, is perhaps the most popular board game in the world, played by millions of people in China, other parts of Asia, and wherever Chinese have settled.
It exercises the brain in much the same way as western (international) chess, but it is much faster moving. The movement of the pieces tends to be more fluid, the positions more open. In a sense, it is all “middle game.” There is no careful buildup of pawn structures, the major pieces come into play immediately and drawn-out endgames are rare.
I regard Chinese chess as my literacy because not only I love it but I can play it very well and benefit from it as well. I start to play chess when I was eight. Since Chinese chess is a kind of brain exercise, it helps me develop deep thinking towards the things. It shapes my value and form my initial opinion toward the life. Also, it helps me become a patient and calm person, which is very important in our way to success. In order to compete chess with other adversaries from other cities, we all need to travel to a certain city and get together to play. Several days’ spending with friends is a very valuable experience in my life. During the time we spent together, I slowly learn how to understand others, how to become a considerate person and how to put the benefit of the team in the first place. They all play a crucial role in my later life. Furthermore, chess present the love from my father. It is mu father that teach me to play and encourage me whenever I fail. I will never forget.
Chess is very important to me because it is my everyday literacy. I can play it and benefit from it.

literacy #2 blog entry #3

The second literacy in our everyday life I want to say is the personal character. Personal character traits are the attitudes you have toward your activities and the challenges they present. These traits may be positive, negative or often in between vary from person to person, depending on the situation. As we know, positive personal character traits result in achievement of goals and success. Negative character traits can lead to failure or frustration. Most of these traits are established through training from parents, while others are gained from peer groups.
I regard personal character as a literacy means that people who have a positive trait own the literacy. For example, people who have the literacy will behave plucky instead of cowardly. Facing some difficulty, they will be determined instead of discouraged. They hold the ability of confident instead of unsure. Doing something important, they will be conscientious instead of careless. When doing something need effort, they will be hard working instead of lazy.
I regard literacy as the entire asset you have. Positive attitude is a critical literacy in everyone’s life because it is the key to success.
I still can remember the time when I complete with adversaries from all over the country in chess. At first, I lost three times in a row. We totally had 12 competitions. At that time, I can either just be sad or adjust my mood. Luckily, I chose the latter. I said to myself “it is not a big deal, the competition just begins and I still have many opportunities. Being beat three times just means the past; I will stand up and fight.” Holding this thought, I did real well in the next nine competitions and finally achieve the second price. I think it is the attitude that make a difference.

literacy #1 blog entry #2

By the reason of that I really do not have ideas about how to write the blog entry. I visit haoshuai’s blog and the things she writes give me some thought. So I decide to write my first literacy---language.
Language is obviously a vital tool. Not only is it a means of communicating thoughts and ideas, but it forges friendships, cultural ties, and economic relationships. Language is such a literacy that we may ignore but play a critical effect in our day-to-day life.
We can come back to the history to figure out the importance of language. For example, the scholar Benjamin Whorf has notes that language shapes thoughts and emotions, determining one’s perception of reality. John Stuart Mill said that “language is the light of the mind.”
With the development of the modern society, changes occur everywhere and everyday, however, the importance of language becomes more and more apparent. To me, who use English as a second language, language, of course, is knowledge and literacy, and in our world today knowledge is one of the key factors in competitiveness. We come to the United States, which use English as its office language. We need to speak, write, listen, and read all in English. In order to do well in the study and adapt to the circumstance here, we are supposed to learn English well.
Here is a story happens in my sister’s home when I visit her with haoshuai in spring break. According to the two story haoshuai writes, I thing the reason causing the misunderstand is the pronounce. Consider that we live in different countries, so we have accent. As a consequence of it, it sometimes leads to some confuses in one word. For it is different for us to pronounce “glass” clearly distinct from “grass” . What’s more, when I try to teach him Chinese, it seems really hard for him to speak a word like our Chinese, the native speakers. In this case, confuse happens. Another story I want to say is for haoshuai and I come from different cities in china, we have our own dialects as well. So when I talk to my sister in Fuzhou dialect, she has totally no idea what we are talking about. Same things happen in Mark. Every time we sit together and chat in mandarin, the office language in china, Mark seems to be curious about what we are talking about, so he keeps asking “what? What?” He says he really wish he can understand Chinese. It is a funny story, but I think it reflect the importance of the language. It is certainly a literacy in our daily lives

respose to Literacy in three metaphors

In “Literacy in three metaphors”, which is written by Sylvia Scribner. The writer defines the literacy as three characters, the “literacy as power.” “Literacy as a state of grace.” “Social meaning of literacy: a case study.” In general, I agree with what the writer says, however, I have some own view towards the meaning of literacy. To me, literacy is sort of grace. And as we talk in class, all the asset we have can be defined as a literacy. So piano, hand-writing, music, singing, dancing, text message are all literacy instead of just writing. And literacy plays an increasing important role in our modern society. For example, as the growth of the modern society, computer slowly replace the labor work, in that case, it is very important for a worker to have the basic computer literacy. What is the same is that the accountants are all supposed to own the basic finical literacy. It is no doubt that the more literacy you have, the more skills you master. And in the modern society, only the people who master the most skills can stand out and win the competition.

Re: Genre Memo for critical analysis for three different task

#1
This is an advertisement and it is in a video form. The feature of it is that it is very funny and can leave us a deep impression and that is what the advertisers want. The typical form of this genre is that it communicates with others in the pictures associated with sound. It persuades audient with its story, a story that is funny or educational or something else. The audient for this advertisement is all the consumers, especially the youths. And the purpose is to advertise their products and persuade the youths to buy their products. My text is to analyses the content of the advertisement using the critical thinking methods. Think deep about whether the things in the advertisement are true or it just a path to get to their goal. And after thinking and doing some researches, I figure out that what they want to convert to costumers is a fake.

#2
This is a photo about the passing of the torch all around the world for the Olympic Games. The typical form of this genre is to catch some moment that can lead the audients to think deep. Some moment occur in our daily life, some are touched, some are encouraged. However, the pity is that we often ignore them. Do you ever remember the first time you learn to walk. Do you ever notice an very old couple watch the setting sun hand in hand. These are all small things that occur in our daily lives. And the photo is to record them in a special way. The audient of the photo is the people all around the world especially Chinese people all around the world. And the purpose of the photo is to honor jingjing, a brave girl and encourage Chinese as well, also, it blame the people of their believes of the independence of Tibet. My text is to analysis the different view that Chinese and Americans may have to the photo due to their cultural diversity. And make a conclusion that we should take this difference into account so as to avoid the conflict.

#3
This is also a video. But it is a funny story that tells people a principle in our life. “What is a friend?” We live in a community that is made of people. So we need friend. The typical of this video is expressing the message with words, sounds and picture. It is very funny and attracted so people like them. In that case, the message it wants to convert to people is more acceptable. The audient of the video is mainly the youth because they like the form. The purpose of this video is to teach people a lesson in a special way, a more acceptable way. My teat is to critical analyses the principle it want to show to us. I generally agree with it, but after critical thinking, I think it is not complete for it nevertheless lack of some important aspects. So I add them for the purpose to make the principle complete.

This is a video of advertisement. It has its commercial effect. As we see in the video, the boy buys two Coca Cola. When we see this, we might think, it is an advertisement of Coca Cola. However, to our surprise, the boy uses them as a stepping-stone in order to buy the Pepsi Cola. And then go away with the Pepsi Cola, leaving Coca Cola there on the road. It is a very short advertisement, but it gives me a deep impression, and that is what the advertiser looking for---using short and simple story or something else to give audients a deep impression.
At the first sight I think it is funny and deeply influential. However, when I think deep about it, I came up with some question; for example “What message does this advertisement carry and aim at passing to us?” “Does the message reflect the true in our day-to-day life or it convert the wrong message to people just for the purpose of increasing quantities they sell?”
Obviously, now that it is an advertisement of Pespi, it intents to convince consumers that Pepsi is good and we are supposed to buy and drink it everyday. However, since Pepsi is a soda, it means soda is good and we need to drink it in our daily life which I totally disagree with.
Soda is one of the drink people drink in their daily life, but as I know, soda contains many side effect to people especially the couple who are going to give birth. The scientists form Harvard do an experiment on the killing of sperms associated with the cola, a kind of soda. They conclude that cola will directly hurt sperm and affect men’s reproductive ability. What’s worse, it likely results in a babies born disable. In addition cola do harm to the sperm, it prevent the absorbing of calcium and affect children growing up.
We send and recessive message all the time. Video is certainly a form we receive message, but since some commercial purpose, it may contain the mislead message such as the Pepsi advertisement. In that case, we need to develop the ability of tell the fake from the true and benefit from it.

http://image.baidu.com/i?ct=503316480&z=0&tn=baiduimagedetail&word=%BD%F0%BE%A7%BB%A4%CA%A5%BB%F0&in=14234&cl=2&cm=1&sc=0&lm=-1&pn=7&rn=1&di=76255300&ln=140
2008 saw many changes in China, both good and bad. 2008, the Olympic Games was held in China. 2008, the Tibet wants to independent from China. And the photo is a famous photo online that is popular among all Chinese. And the thing happened in the photo will never fade to the time in every Chinese’ memory.
As we see in the picture, there is a beautiful disable girl seating in the wheel chair. She tightly holds the torch with her body in order to protect the torch from being attracted by the men. She is so brave that acts like an angel. And there is a guy being overwhelmed by a gun. As a Chinese, we all know, what she protects is not just a torch, but the represent of China; the represent of the peace of the world and we admire what the girl has done in the picture. This is a story happens before the Olympic Games. As a rule, before the Olympic Games, the torch will be passed all around the world. Local time April 7, 2008 in Paris, a beautiful girl seating in the wheel chair get the task to pass the torch. Her name is jingjin and she is a fence-player in the national queue. After selecting, she gloriously became a member of passing the torch in Paris. When she started to pass the torch, some Tibet people who support Tibet to independent from China attacked Jingjin and the torch. The stirring moment, which shoes in the photo, came. Jingjin turned her body and protect the torch with her body. And the attacker immediately is overmastered by the local police.
However, the Americans, who have no idea of this history, may see the photo in a total different ways; they may focus on the gun and think that the gun attack people at the first sight instead of the protecting act by jingjing. They react that way due to the lacing of knowledge of this history. A few questions like “what is the picture portrays?” “Why is the gun attack the people?” come to their minds. As we Chinese, the photo seems to say: “we Chinese will never give in to the arm and we will never give up the right to keep the unit of our mother land, China. We will try all we can do, even sacrifice our lives to protect the peace of our mother land.” Also, the picture encourages Chinese people who are living overseas as well. After that, Chinese people all around the world begin to get together to protect the passing of the torch in their areas. In the case, we Chinese let the world to see our solidarity and our decision and strength to protect our mother land. On the other hand, the picture may mean no educational meanings to the Americans, for as much as they have no knowledge of the event. Consider what if they know the event, will it encourage the Americans the same as it does in Chinese people? The answer is absolutely no; by the reason of that it cares about the unit of China but some of the Americans totally do not care about it and some even support the independent of Tibet. As a consequence of this, instead of being encouraged, they may feel and act in an opposite way.
A picture can mean two opposite meaning to the people in different countries. It results from the cultural diversity. Even in American, people may react in different ways for the different believes they hold. As a result of this, I think when we communicate with others, whatever forms we use—photos, conversations or videos, we should take the cultural diversity and the various views different people may have in order to reduce the unintended conflicts.

We all need friends, but as we grow older and older, we meet more and more people. Some of them are our friends, but some of them are just strangers. Everyday there are always people stepping out of our lives and new people stepping into our lives. The fact leads us to think a problem: “what is a friend?” or “what is a true friend mean?”
The video use a very funny way to give us the answer of what is a friend. It uses the model of question and answer and combined the words with cartoon people. It attracts people at the first time they watch it. Also the words are great and give audients a deep impression of what a friend is. It states “a friend id someone who will compliment you.” “a friend will cheer you up when you are sad.” “A friend will let you win sometimes.” “A friend will remember your birthday.” “A friend is fun to be with.” “And a friend will make you smile.” At last it concludes: “it is nice to have a friend.”
In general, I agree with what the video says, but I think it just misses something. I think we should add something in order to make it perfect. A friend is someone with whom you dare to be yourself. They make you to put on nothing, only to be who you really are. You can say what ever you think, so long as it is a true yourself. They will stand by your side forever even in the condition that others may easy to misjudge you. They can avow your little vanities, hates, envies and embarrassment. They understand you, you can cry with them, laugh with them., share them what you have in mind and secret as well. And the most famous saying is that: “A friend in need is a friend indeed.”
Nothing can be perfect, so does the video. I love it, both the words and the way it express the ideas to its audients. But I just think the content is not integrity. So I think it should add more content into it so as to make it perfect.

a tipical day in my life

As with any other days, it is a common day in my life. At seven o'clock in the early morning, my clock rings. I have to get up and do some washing. Then I go to the cafeteria to eat my breakfast with my roommate. After enjoying the delicious meal, we go to the business complex for our IDES class. the class lasts for 50 minutes and then I go to Bessay hall for my WRA1004 class and she goes to the library to study. At about 10 o'clock, I go out of Bessay hall and go to Wells hall for my macroeconomic class. It also runs for 50minutes. At about 11:10. We take the No.30 bus to Hubbard and go to cafeteria to eat lunch. The time for reaching our room is about 12:30. And we begin to search the Internet. At about 1 o'clock, I go to have a sleep, it probably lasts for 2to 3 hours. Then I get up to watch some movies. we eat supper at about 5:30. At 7:00, I go to have a shower and talk to my family for about 1 hour. At 9 o'clock, I begin to work- doing my homework, do some reading. At about 1 o'clock. I go to sleep and that's my whole day. a photographic image analyze

This is a photographic image I got from one of my friend. I fall in love with it at the first sight. It is very simple but contain much. As we see, there are two footprints on the beach. Obveriously, one is from a man and one is from a woman. The photographer wants to depict a membory that a long time ago, she and he came to a strange place. It is such a strange place that full of challenge and dismay. But they went together, they went hand in hand. The childish faces were filled with tears and laugh. They went throught the beach, leaving the footprints that stay together. She make this photo in order to record the hard time they spent together and the confident that they will face the difficulities in the rest of life together.
Photographers, like writers in a certain extense, affect people in their ways. When I first saw the image, I was totally touched by it. I felt very warm. It is a prove that they got through the hard time together. The footprint on the beach gives me many image; for example, what happens in tha past time and what is about to happen in the future. But the most important is that they stand together! Only this can make me feel warm and touched. I think the photographer did a very good job at choosing the image, it stands very close to what she wants to express.

happly volentine's day

http://player.youku.com/player.php/sid/17970971/v.swf

Videos come in many frames, sometimes they are cute, sometimes they are sad and sometimes include a happy ending. However, they all involve a certain themes and purposes. For example, some for advertising and some are just comedies to give people fun. The link i provede above is find in youku, which is similar to youtube. The video is funny and just for celebrate the valentine's day.
The video is not similar to the video that the writer writes in the reading. It is just state a common theme in a very funny story.
The roles in the video are very funny, they are two beans. First the boy bean shoot a cuke and succeed, and then is the girl bean's turn. Unfortunely, she failed and lost her temper. So the boy bean took the cuke closer to the girl bean, but she fail again. And the boy bean moved more closer,closer... finally, in order to make the girl happy, he acts as a target to get the girl's shoot. It acts in a very funny way, we laugh when we watch it. However, when we finish love, we start to think a very important thing. That is love. It is love that makes the biy bean willing to be the target. And love always goes with give. At the end of the video, the appear a sentence in chinese, while translated into English, it says, if you are together, everyday is Volentine's day. It is very common sentence but can make us think deeply.
Video is such a thing that can affect in its own way. Maybe we even not realize, but itit true.so

T e best is yet to come

T e best is yet to come

Once I read an article. It says: “maybe God wants you to meet a few wrong people before you meet the right one. So that when we finally meet the right one, we will learn to be grateful.” As soon as I see the sticker, it reminds me to think of the article.
Life is not always going as well as we expect it to, sometimes you will be turned down and sometimes be cheated by it. However, the most important is not what happens outside but what your attitude that counts. Attitude is everything so you need to hold the view that “ the best is yet to come.”
Art Linkletter says: " Things turn out best for people who make the best out of the way things turn out." If you are now in a bad situation, you feel sad and despired. The mos important thing you are supposed to do is to change your mood. You can think "Oh, I have get through the worst thing, what other bad thing in the world can beat me? The best is yet to come and it is just around the corner. So I need to be happy to welcome it." Changing your attitude towards it will certainly brings you a totally different feeling .You will find that life is so beautiful and full of happiness.
The most important thing you should learn is a positive attitude " The best is yet to come." is just a life attitude that can lead you to success and happiness for happiness is a journey instead of a destination.

Once I read a letter that a daughter write to her father about her appreciate to her mother. But I have ignored it. When I slowly grow up, I read it again. To my surprise, I am deeply touched by the letter. Because the writer expresses her true feeling and I totally agree with it.
The writer describes a common social thing using her own experience. First of all, she starts by feeling lucky about herself that her mother is still alive for her to express thank to, Because many of her friends’ mom are dead when they start to realize the love from their moms. It is a common phenomena that exist widely in the people in my age. When we are children, we never thought to be thankful about the care and all the stuff we need to live that provided by moms. We take these for grant. As we just start to get matured, we always think we are strong enough that we are no longer need the advice from moms. The writer say: “For the love, patience and just plain hard work that go into raising a child? For running after a toddler, for understanding a moody teenager, for tolerating a college student who knows everything? For waiting for the day when a daughter realizes her mother really is? Later, when we fail and really get matured, we know the important of moms and begin to appreciate. But sometimes it is too late. So at the end of the letter, she pray for her mom from her own heart. It reminds me to think of myself, now I really begin to thank my mom.

response..

In the article "Mother Tongue", the writer tells us a personal story. She tells us that her mother speak a poor English and it brings both she and her mother many troubles because language is such a important tool for us to communicate in our day-to-day lives. After read the whole article, what touch me the most is that "But to me, my mother's English is perfectly claer, perfectly natural. It's my mother tongue. Her language, as I herd it, is vivid, direct, full of observation and imagery. That was the language that helped shape the way I saw things, expressed things, made sense of the world."(Ton 65)
I am totally inspried by the writer. Althought her mother speaks such a poor language, which is defined "broken and limited" by others, she still regards it as "perfect". I think it just because there is a mood in it. We should all have a mother tongue in our heart, no matter how bad it is, it is still our mother tongue. It reminds me of my dialect. I come from China, but apart from chinese, there are many dialects in China. As we know, with the development of the modern society, English, which is the offical language in the world, become more and more important, people pay more attention to it and ignore their original mother tongue. It sounds strange to me that someone feel shame of can not speak English but take it for grant of can not speak dialect. It is the dialect that give us the first sense of the world and accompany us to grow up. It is the dialect that show the history of our mothertown. we should regard it with thankful feeling as we regard our mother. No matter how limited it can be used and how broken it is , it should still be there, in our heart because it is the origin of the warm when we are in a strange country. also, it has a warm name----- mother tongue.

preceive with language --------response

In challenging Theories of Knowing , Hamlet quota Mikhail Bakhtin' s saying "without the word, there is no world". In general, I agree with him. Word is the most important way to communicate and communication is the crucial thing in cognizing and developing society. As a child, I had no idea of the world. It was the people around me that taught me the living skills, what the outside world is and all stuff I need to know in order to survive in the world by using words. As I grew up, I also use language to communicate with other people to figure out something i did not know and to express myself to other people. Just the same as other people, I use words in my everyday life--I use it to chat, to learn, to make friends and so on. I can not image how my world will be without the word. In this case, I can say it is word that play the most important role in my perceiving the world. On the other hand, latter, Hamlet writes someone think just speaking and writing are words. However, in my point of view, all things that can communicate with other can named "word", such as body language. Dumb people can also perceive the outside world, they can use body language. Without speaking, they can create their own worlds as well.
